Colorado's San Juan Mountains are some of the most spectacular overland terrain on the continent. The Alpine Loop connects Ouray, Silverton, and Lake City over high mountain passes — Engineer and Cinnamon among them — climbing well above treeline past ghost towns and old mines, with optional harder trails like Black Bear and Imogene for experienced drivers.
