The 40 Series is the Land Cruiser that built the legend — a leaf-sprung, solid-axle icon from 1960 to 1984. We restore them frame-off and build them to climb.

The Toyota FJ40 (and its diesel BJ40 siblings) is the vehicle most people picture when they hear "Land Cruiser." Produced from 1960 through 1984, it paired Toyota's legendary F and 2F inline-six engines with a stout part-time 4WD system, solid front and rear axles, and leaf springs at all four corners. Simplicity is its superpower — and it is exactly what makes a 40 Series worth restoring decades later.

Desert Dune Offroad approaches the 40 Series two ways. The first is a faithful frame-off restoration: media-blasted frame, correct drivetrain rebuild, factory-correct finishes, and the details that separate a real restoration from a quick respray. The second is a restomod trail build — keeping the soul of the truck while quietly upgrading brakes, cooling, electrical, and suspension so it can be driven hard and trusted on a remote trail.

Because parts support for the 40 Series remains excellent, almost anything is on the table: power steering conversions, front disc brake upgrades, 5-speed swaps, engine rebuilds or modern swaps, and suspension that rides far better than the originals without losing the classic stance.
