It's one of the most common questions we get: should I restore an FJ40 or an FJ60? Both are legendary, both hold their value, and both are deeply rewarding — but they deliver very different ownership experiences. The right answer depends entirely on how you plan to use the truck.
The FJ40: Pure, Raw Character
The 40 Series (1960–1984) is the Land Cruiser at its most elemental. Short, narrow, leaf-sprung, and utterly charismatic, an FJ40 is a vehicle you drive for the joy of driving it. It turns heads everywhere, it's simple to work on, and a well-restored example is a genuine appreciating asset.
The trade-offs are real, though. It's loud, it's firm, and it's a two-door with limited space. As a weekend toy, a trail truck, or a collector piece, nothing beats it. As something you'd drive across a state with the family, it asks more of you.
The FJ60: The Usable Classic
The 60 Series (1980–1990) takes the same bulletproof mechanicals and wraps them in a comfortable four-door wagon. There's room for people and gear, the ride is more forgiving, and — especially in fuel-injected FJ62 form — it's a truck you can actually use for long-distance overland travel.
You give up a little of the raw 40-Series magic, but you gain enormous practicality. For clients who want a classic Land Cruiser they'll genuinely road-trip and camp out of, the 60 is often the smarter restoration.
Cost, Parts, and Reality
Parts support for both is excellent, which is part of why Land Cruisers are so restorable. FJ40 values tend to run higher for comparable condition, and a frame-off 40 restoration can be a significant investment — but the return is strong. FJ60/62 restorations often deliver more usable truck per dollar.
Whichever you choose, the principle is the same: a real restoration is about doing the structure, drivetrain, and details correctly. That's where a specialist matters.
Our Take
Want a charismatic weekend icon or collector piece? Restore the FJ40. Want a classic you'll actually travel in? Restore the FJ60 — or an FJ62 for fuel injection and an automatic. Either way, we'll help you pick the right candidate and build it to last.
