Why the Lexus GX 470 Is the Best Value Overland Platform

Ask us for the best bang-for-buck overland platform and the answer comes quickly: the Lexus GX 470. Underneath the badge, it's a Land Cruiser Prado 120 — and that changes everything.

Land Cruiser Underneath

The GX 470 (2003–2009) is body-on-frame, runs full-time 4WD with a lockable center differential, keeps a solid rear axle, and uses the same indestructible 4.7L 2UZ-FE V8 found in the 100 Series Land Cruiser. KDSS was available on later models. This is real Land Cruiser engineering, sold under a luxury badge that — fairly or not — depreciated faster.

The Value Equation

Because GX 470s can be found for a fraction of an equivalent Land Cruiser, you can buy the truck and fund a serious build for what a comparable 100 Series might cost on its own. That's why the North American overland community has embraced it so completely.

How We Build Them

A great GX 470 build starts with suspension — the soft factory setup responds beautifully to a tuned system from OME, Dobinsons, or ICON. Add sliders and a front skid to protect the low body, a modest lift and 33s, and overland storage, and you have a capable, comfortable, reliable expedition truck that punches far above its price.

The Catch

There isn't much of one. Fuel economy is modest, and the timing belt is an interval-service item to stay on top of (we handle it). Beyond that, a well-sorted GX 470 is one of the smartest overland buys you can make — and one of our favorite builds to do.
